What is an ITF-14 barcode?
ITF-14 (also called SCC-14 or GTIN-14 in logistics contexts) is a 14-digit barcode symbology using Interleaved 2 of 5 encoding on corrugated cases and cartons. The first digit is a packaging indicator; the remaining digits identify the trade item at the case level. Warehouse management systems, distributors, and retailers scan ITF-14 symbols on outer packaging rather than the consumer-facing EAN or UPC on individual units.

Limitations and common mistakes
Individual consumer units use EAN-13 or UPC-A. Some logistics workflows accept generic ITF rather than ITF-14 when a 14-digit structure is not required.

- Using the wrong digit count for this fixed-length symbology.
- Assuming a generated number is an officially assigned product or case identifier.
- Trimming quiet zones when cropping the image for a label layout.
- Scaling the barcode unevenly so bar width ratios no longer match the generated image.

Printing and scanning notes
Printing
- Print directly on corrugate or on labels rated for warehouse abrasion.
- Use bearer bars on ITF symbols when your spec requires them for print quality.
- Maintain vertical bar height; ITF is sensitive to vertical compression on boxes.
Scanning
- Use warehouse imager or laser scanners configured for Interleaved 2 of 5.
- Scan at the case level, not through shrink wrap that distorts bar width.
- Validate the 14-digit result against your WMS expected GTIN-14 record.
