Alt: Urdu Nastaliq PDF OCR extraction using ConversionTab
Urdu OCR is difficult because many Urdu PDFs use Nastaliq typography. This style is beautiful for reading but difficult for OCR because letters connect, dots are small, and words may flow diagonally. ConversionTab helps users extract Urdu text from scanned books, newspapers, educational notes, certificates, and official forms.
What makes Urdu PDF extraction different?
Urdu text is not always printed in a simple straight font. Nastaliq can create variable spacing and curved word shapes. If the scan is old, compressed, or photocopied, OCR may miss dots or break words. A language-specific Urdu page is important because users need guidance, not just an upload button.
Newspapers
Tight columns and faded ink can reduce recognition.
Poetry
Line breaks and decorative layouts may need manual cleanup.
ConversionTab use
Extract the text first, then correct line order and special words manually.
Practical tips before uploading
- Use a flat scan instead of a tilted phone image.
- Make sure dots are visible.
- Extract newspaper columns one by one where possible.
- Review names, poetry, and headings after OCR.

Workflow: from PDF to usable text
Before you upload
- Export or scan at a steady resolution; avoid heavy shadows across text.
- Crop to the page region you need—wide empty margins slow OCR and can pull in noise.
- If the PDF mixes Urdu with another script, plan to select every language you can see in the picker.
In ConversionTab
Upload the PDF, choose Urdu (plus any other languages on the page), turn on text from images when the file is scanned or flattened, then extract. Copy to your editor or download a .txt file for the next step in your workflow.
When to enable “text from images”
Use it whenever highlight-and-copy fails in your PDF viewer, when text appears as a picture, or when exports from scanners or mobile cameras produce image-only pages. Native text layers can stay off for faster runs, but scans almost always need OCR.
Mixed-language and noisy pages
Nastaliq-style Urdu needs generous margins in the scan; tight newspaper columns often need column-by-column review after OCR.
For tables, stamps, signatures, and watermarks, expect to tidy spacing and line breaks manually. OCR prioritizes readable characters over perfect layout preservation.
Scan and export checklist
| Signal | What to try | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry small type | Re-scan at 300 DPI, reduce glare | Sharper edges for Urdu letterforms |
| Skewed photo | Straighten before PDF or rotate pages | Improves line reading order |
| Colorful background | Print to flattened greyscale test | Improves contrast for OCR |
| Password protection | Unlock locally, then extract | Engines cannot OCR locked content |
Nastaliq columns and tight newsprint
Urdu newspapers and pamphlets compress vertical space. OCR may read across a gutter or join two unrelated headlines. When the layout is multi-column, extract column-by-column if your viewer allows cropping, or accept a noisier pass and clean Urdu poetry or headlines by hand.
Wide margins
Rescan with a little more margin so descenders are not clipped.
Fine print
Increase DPI before OCR; small diacritics are the first to disappear.
Mixed Latin
Add English when Latin URLs or phone numbers sit inside Urdu lines.
