Extract Vietnamese Text from PDFs While Preserving Tone Marks

Vietnamese OCR is sensitive because tone marks and diacritics are part of the word. Characters like ă, â, ê, ô, ơ, ư, đ and tone marks must be recognized clearly. ConversionTab helps extract Vietnamese text from PDFs and explains why scan quality matters.

Why tone marks matter

A missing mark can change the meaning of a Vietnamese word. This makes high-quality OCR especially important for names, addresses, certificates, and official records.

How ConversionTab helps

ConversionTab gives users a dedicated Vietnamese OCR path instead of generic extraction. Users can quickly extract the text, then review tone marks, names, and document numbers before using the result.

Common OCR causes

  • Small text makes tone marks hard to see.
  • Low-resolution scans remove small marks.
  • Compressed PDFs can blur đ and d.
  • Forms may break spacing after extraction.

Workflow: from PDF to usable text

Before you upload

  • Export or scan at a steady resolution; avoid heavy shadows across text.
  • Crop to the page region you need—wide empty margins slow OCR and can pull in noise.
  • If the PDF mixes Vietnamese with another script, plan to select every language you can see in the picker.

In ConversionTab

Upload the PDF, choose Vietnamese (plus any other languages on the page), turn on text from images when the file is scanned or flattened, then extract. Copy to your editor or download a .txt file for the next step in your workflow.

When to enable “text from images”

Use it whenever highlight-and-copy fails in your PDF viewer, when text appears as a picture, or when exports from scanners or mobile cameras produce image-only pages. Native text layers can stay off for faster runs, but scans almost always need OCR.

Mixed-language and noisy pages

Tone marks stack tightly; low contrast blue ink on white paper is a frequent failure mode—rescan if vowels look merged.

For tables, stamps, signatures, and watermarks, expect to tidy spacing and line breaks manually. OCR prioritizes readable characters over perfect layout preservation.

Tone marks on low-contrast forms

Vietnamese vowels carry stacked diacritics that collapse on blue-ink scans and mobile glare. After extraction, read aloud short sentences: wrong tones usually sound wrong before they look wrong on screen.

  1. Verify proper nouns and place names tone-by-tone against the PDF.
  2. Watch đ vs d in IDs and addresses.
  3. English product names inline: confirm boundaries did not swallow Vietnamese particles.

Thin paper

Bleed-through from the reverse page creates ghost strokes—rescan with a dark backing sheet.
